Chinese Brush & Watercolour Paintings

This project showcases the subjects covered using Chinese brush and watercolour painting, from animals, birds, flowers and landscapes.

Each painting captures the spirit of the animal or landscape and reflects the majesty and wonders of nature.

Birds

Birds are a gift to paint, using Chinese brush techniques. The action of water on rice paper produces the most exquisite effects for feathers. The subtlety of fluff and feathers is easy to achieve when painting birds. I had a lot of success painting owls and cranes using this method, especially a Tawny Owl chick who had been abandoned and was starving when found by my neighbour.

Animals

Painting animals is magical. Capturing the spirit of a wild and free horse or the magnificence of a lion is truly inspiring. I capture their essence, their strength, and determination to survive whatever happens.

Landscape

I really enjoy painting landscapes, especially the dramatic and sometimes moody Dartmoor. The granite stone walls are really interesting and often precariously balanced on top of each other.
All my landscape paintings capture the mood of that location and the time of day, often early morning when the light is very special.

Trees, Fruit & Flowers

Painting flowers is especially therapeutic as the petals are often so delicate you just have to concentrate on making each one perfect. The action of watercolours on xuan and other rice papers is totally captivating, as you can never be certain of the finished result.
